The WhatsUp Gold team here at Ipswitch has been working pretty hard lately as we are preparing to launch the new WhatsUp Gold version 12.4 in the coming weeks. Everyone is pretty excited for the new version to go public as the new features are sure to add a whole new dynamic to the network management industry. Of course with the excitement of a new launch looming, the team has been focusing their energy and attention on that, which is why the blog here has sort of become a victim of some neglect of late. However, our aim is to bring the DNM back to life as we move forward, and to get things back on track, I’d like to present a recent installment of valuable WhatsUp Gold information from our resident WhatsUp Gold Guru.
Proactively Monitoring the WhatsUp Database Size
As you use WhatsUp Gold to manage more and more aspects of your network, the size of the WhatsUp database can increase, and database and database size has a big impact on performance. To help you proactively manage the size of the WhatsUp database, I created two tools:
- The WhatsUp Gold Internal Database Active Monitor keeps an eye on the current size of the database and alerts you if it starts to grow too large.http://www.whatsupgold.com/resources/scripts/DB_size_AM.tx
- The WhatsUp Gold Internal Database Performance Monitor tracks the database size over time, helping you see how changes to what you are monitoring have impacted affected the size of the database. http://www.whatsupgold.com/resources/scripts/DB_size_PM.txt
Instructions on using these monitors are included at the top of each of the script files.
If you’re already having database size problems, here’s a hint: Any and unsolicited are useful for figuring out which specific passive events you want to monitor long-term, but if you use them to collect all passive events for a long period of time, your database size can easily balloon out of control.
As always, if you have any questions about the scripts, your WhatsUp Gold database, or the WhatsUp product line in general, get in touch with the guru. My e-mail address is guru@whatsupgold.com, and I’m on Twitter as @whatsupguru.
