Cryptographic Hashing

Cryptographic hashing is critical for verifying the integrity of archived log data especially when complying with federal or state regulations. Once the information is collected, cryptographic hashing verifies the integrity of the log information and assures that it hasn’t been altered. Cryptographic methods use mathematical processes called algorithms to encrypt and decrypt data. Common algorithms used for hashing include MD5 (Message Digest 5) and SHA-2 (Secure Hash Algorithm-2). Hashing, the most basic type of cryptography, creates a unique fixed-size string that represents the contents of a file. Familiar applications of cryptographic hashing are used in digital signatures and in verifying the integrity of files downloaded from the Internet.

The significant difference between cryptographic hashing and other cryptography methods is that hashing is used only for comparison purposes. Since even a small modification of the data results in a drastic change to the hash, matching values prove a file hasn’t been altered. Attackers who gain unauthorized access to a network often try to prevent detection by altering log files. Cryptographic hashing assures you’ll know if unauthorized individuals have tampered with your network’s log files. Maintaining the integrity of log files is crucial when this information is needed for evidentiary use or regulatory compliance. Log management software that performs cryptographic hashing for your log files ensures you will be able to provide reliable information when required.

The WhatsUp Log Management Suite provides for the automation of network logging tasks and the protection of data. The Suite uses cryptographic hashing to protect against data tampering in addition to automating the collection, storage, archival, and backup of log files. Proving the integrity of log files prevents financial penalties for non-compliance. In addition, the Suite generates compliance reports to meet regulatory compliance requirements. WhatsUp Log Management allows you to monitor and manage log files more efficiently.

Tired of switching between separate applications to manage your network? If you have WhatsUp Gold and WhatsUp Log Management, you can leverage a free add-on allowing you to integrate the two systems. Accessing your entire network from a single pane of glass saves you time and helps reduce errors.
