Ipswitch's Five Free Tools Save Network Administrators Time and Money

WhatsUp IP Address Tracker, Visual TraceRoute, TFTP Server, Syslog Server, and PortScanner are the latest free offerings from Ipswitch Network Management Division

LEXINGTON, Mass. ─ March 1, 2012 ─ Ipswitch Inc.’s Network Management Division, developer of the WhatsUp Gold suite of innovative IT management software, is excited to offer five free tools – IP Address Tracker (IPAT), Visual TraceRoute (VTR), TFTP Server, Syslog Server, and PortScanner – which all have a common goal: to save IT administrators time and money, streamline processes, and eliminate human error.

The IPAT tool streamlines IP address management by automating the discovery of IP spaces, and eliminates the human errors associated with updating home-grown databases or spreadsheets. Key features include the ability to centrally discover your IP space quickly; identify free and in-use IP addresses; determine IP address utilization; locate duplicate IP addresses; categorize discovered devices automatically; and find an IP address using its hostname, status, or MAC address.

The VTR tool identifies and isolates network connectivity problems by displaying a packet’s route across a network and providing detailed response time information from start to finish. Other time-saving features include control tracing behavior by adjusting trace parameters; customization of the level of trace result details; a real-time view of trace data using the topology map; speed remediation with an intuitive user interface; and performing traces with ICMP, UDP, and TCP protocols.

The TFTP Server allows network administrators to save time and effort while uploading and downloading files. It can securely transfer operating system software or device configuration files across computers and devices in a network. Key features include restricting client permissions to the server; transfer and storage of IOS firmware configurations and images; back-up and restoring of network device configuration files including Cisco IOS, Juniper, HP and 3Com; and support of files up to 4GB. The tool also runs as a Windows service, supporting 24X7 server availability.

With the ability to view messages in real-time or filter result data the way you need to see it, the Syslog Server allows IT administrators to take charge of their network by understanding the data their devices are giving them. It enables IT administrators to easily collect, save, view, or forward syslog messages from anywhere on their network. Key features include reliably processing up to 6 million messages per hour; message display in real-time; 10 user-configurable highlighting profiles for organizing your messages; creating flexible rules for processing messages; and import of historical syslog files.

Understanding host vulnerabilities is a critical component of overall network security. The PortScanner tool enables users to make sure any open “doors” on their network – their hosts -- are locked and secure. Key features include identifying active hosts using ICMP and TCP; utilizing multiple scanning deep-level technologies to deduce open ports; bookmarking scanning configurations as favorites for quick assess; and utilizing the included database of known ports, or customizing it to your environment.

“Understanding the needs and wants of IT administrators, network administrators, and the likes is always top of mind for the WhatsUp Gold team,” stated Ennio Carboni, president of Ipswitch Network Management Division. “These free tools help those in these essential roles save time and money, while streamlining important processes.”
